Origin and geographical distribution : Andes from Colombia to Bolivia, between 1500-3000 m. Introduced to Chile. Status : Wild, cultivated. Description : Semi-lignose, ramified, height to 10 m, leaves lobed, typical hairy below, propagated by seeds; flowers hairy green-yellow, plants monoecious or dioecious, fruit 5-lobed, ovoid-oblong, yellowish green to orange at maturity, 6-15 x 3-8 cm; many seeds; pulp cream to yellow. Uses : Pulp used to prepare preserves and candies. Flavour: sour, aromatic, pleasant. Rich in papain.
