Common names : Sp: toronche, siglalón silvestre (Ecuador) Origin and geographical distribution : Andes of Central and Southern Ecuador (Azuay, Loja) and Northern Peru (Cajamarca) between 1600–2450 m. Status : Wild. Description : Semi-lignose, ramified, height to 10 m, propagated by seeds; typical stipules that convert in spines after leaf fall, leaves lobed; flowers variable white, yellow to reddish, plants dioecious, fruit variable 10-lobed, specially when immature, ovoid-oblong to oblong, yellowish green to orange at maturity, 6-15 x 3-8 cm; many seeds; pulp cream to yellow. Uses : Pulp used to prepare preserves and candies. Flavour sour, aromatic, pleasant. Very rich in papain.
